Since the end of the Cold War, the RAF, in terms of its configuration and modus operandi, has been on something of a progressive journey. It has moved from a largely static posture whereby it was envisaged we would fight our war or apply the effect of airpower from locations in the UK or Germany, to a position where, in pursuit of national policy, ve would, as part of the wider defence effort, adopt an 'expeditionary' footing. Without getting into an arcane debate about the definition of the 'expeditionary' posture, it is probably sufficient to know that this is about being equipped, trained and ready to apply the airpower effect wherever, across the globe, it might be required.
