Using VAX emulation in mission-critical radar environments, even if the original hardware interfaces of the communication subsystem are also to be replaced with commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) interface cards, built on an entirely different PCI bus architecture, proved to have several advantages:rn1. The original Mission Software (MS) and the Built-in Test (BITF.) software can run in their original run time image format;rn2. No migration of the Mission Software is required;rn3. There are no software copyright or property rights issues;rn4. There are no high costs for software development and testing;rn5. The end-user interface remains the same; no new training required for users;rn6. Excellent price/performance value;rn7. Hardware maintenance is easy and low cost.
