Rohan Gunaratna, the author of the ground-breaking Inside AI Qaeda (London: Hurst, 2002), has now co-edited (with Stefanie Kam) this much-needed Handbook which comprehensively maps the terrorist threat in the Asia-Pacific. As he states in his introduction, "the global wave of insurgencies, terrorism and ideological extremism pose preeminent national security threats to the countries of the Asia-Pacific region" (p. xiii).The Asia-Pacific is a vast region spanning from Central Asia to New Zealand in the South Pacific. However, it is home to around 64% of the world's Muslim population (p. xix), and alarmingly, the Islamic State (IS) has made inroads into South, Central and Southeast Asia. The threat from the IS is also broad-based, as it exists both in the physical as well as in the virtual domain (p. xxvii). Gunaratna argues in his introduction that the region is a critical front in the fight against the IS (p. xxvi) and he recommends pre-emptive action, particularly in the areas of counter-radicalization and deradicalization or rehabilitation programs (p. xxviii).
