Situated prominently in the field of feminist security studies, the book provides the first systematic gender analysis of women's integration into NATO forces yet also compares the national security policies of different states which few academic studies have previously attempted. The aim of the book is to "build a theoretical model that explains why states abandon their policies of exclusion, and promote gender integration in a way that women's military participation becomes an integral part of military force".
