The imperative is, roughly speaking, that any act should be universalizable, that is, repeatable in all situations, and of course, this poses an insoluble dilemma. The acts of living cannot be universalized without destroying the planet and the possibility of life on it. This applies to African elephants in the wild and to bark beetles in a forest as well as to mankind. Further, the continuation of modern living standards requires capital investment, and all capital investment degrades the environment, and universal degradation of the environment means universal death. The best we can hope to do is to walk as softly on the earth as we are able to do while living out our lives and being replaced by our offspring. Long views seem to be that we need to arrest human population growth and then perhaps to reduce human population over time, to ease the destructive pressures that we now exert on the earth.
