Two thousand years ago, bronze tubes were used forbladder catheterisation, S shaped bronze tube was foundwith other medical devices in the ruins of Pompeii1.However,use of indwelling catheter for urine drainagebecame widespread since 1936, after a U.S. manufacturer,Davol Rubber Company, introduced a soft rubber tubewith an inflatable balloon that was based on a design byFrederick Foley2. Millions of patients are now usingFoley’s ctheter for various indications. In USA 25% ofpatients in acute care setup receive indwelling catheter3.Catheterisation is not a hazard freeintervention;it canleadto several complications including inadvertent catheterremoval with urethral trauma.
