International Seminars in Life Sciences at the Technical University of Valencia

Facing the social demand for increasingly internationlised University Degrees, the ETSIA Valencia (Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingenieros Agrónomos, Universidad Politécnica de Valencia), together with the ETSMRE Valencia (Escuela Técnica Superior del Medio Rural y Enología, Universidad Politécnica de Valencia) set up a teaching initiative known as International Seminars in Life Sciences (ISLS) three years ago. The general objective of the ISLS course is to introduce students to current research developments and the latest in technology in a variety of domains related to Biosciences, including Agriculture Engineering, Enology, Forestry, Food Science and Bioengineering. Teaching staff for the course consists in professors visiting the UPV through academic and research exchange programs. Through lectures designed from an engineering point of view, students will be encouraged to take active part in seminars and class discussions as well as to report on selected topics before the class. Problem solving, teamwork, debate and oral communication skills will be reinforced. At the end of the course, students should be able to readily follow the scientific and technical focus adopted in the class, thereby improving their understanding of the English language and academic discourse required for research and study within and beyond the European Union. An overwhelming welcome of this teaching initiative among both student ands teaching staff has put the ETSIA and ETSMRE (both Schools about to merge into a new one) to the challenge of creating new groups and exporting the program to other European Partner Universities.
