Kathleen Nichol has written a well-thought-out and informative article on data base proliferation and its implications for librarians (Spec Libr 1983 Apr;74(2):110-8). She describes a number of opportunities this opens up for perceptive administrators and staff members. The contrasting approaches to data management used by bibliographic and commercial data bases are reviewed by Roger Tagg (Program 1982 Oct;16(4):191-9). Carol Tenopir shows that data bases follow Bradford's law when the searcher is looking for citations in a multidisciplinary field (Online Rev 1982 Oct;6(5):399-419). The careful selection of data bases for access and searching will become increasingly important. The executive director of the National Federation of Abstracting and Indexing Societies, Lynne Neufeld, looks at what's ahead for secondary services (ASIS Bull 1982 Dec;9(2):40- 3).
