摘要

Eggs of marine animals concentrate and redistribute essential fatty acids, whichare critical for the health of individuals, populations, and communities. Patternsof interannual variation in egg fatty acid composition of red drum ( Sciaenopsocellatus ) observed over eight years were related to abundances of particularprey during summer months and paralleled the Palmer Drought Severity Index. The amount of essential fatty acids in eggs increased significantly during the dri-est period of a drought. The analysis also revealed climate- related shifts in thedegree of benthic–pelagic coupling and pelagic recycling. This study demonstratesthat egg composition reveals trophodynamic consequences of climatic events inmarine ecosystems.
