Tramping through podocarp forests, scram-bling up alpine zones, stumbling through tus-sock grasslands, and clambering along rockycoastlines were common activities I enjoyed asan undergraduate student studying Ecology andBotany at the University of Otago, in southernNew Zealand. We set out to test the theories ofgreat ecologists such as Gleason, Grime, MacAr-thur, and Wilson, which allowed us to developour understanding of ecology as well as familiar-ize ourselves with the surrounding environment.Being able to continually explore unique anddiverse ecosystems reinforced my desire to studyecology.
