In this edition of the Paper Trail, arising and establishedresearchers share their love of fish in one of the most well- studied species, thethreespine stickleback. Not only were they both banished to remote islands earlyin their careers, but they also had to think differently about their approaches inaddressing what was happening with stickleback. While one was forced to thinkoutside- the- box, the other, after spending many sleepless nights distressed by his“negative” research results, finally had the light go on and the proverbial paradigmshift in thinking. Years later, they have made great strides in advancing our under-stand in how genetics and the environment are causing subtle, yet importantchanges in stickleback. Quite the “tale” and definitely worth the read.
