The deep- sea squat lobster Kiwa tyleri thrives on chemosynthetic bacteria,which it grows on two types of specialized setae densely covering the ventral sideof its carapace and pereopods. Its habitat is limited by a thermally well- defined andspatially narrow envelope of warm water surrounding the base and chimneys ofhydrothermal vents situated on the northern and southern branches of the EastScotia Ridge in the Southern Ocean and is bound by freezing cold temperaturesof the deep sea. Specimens of K. tyleri occur segregated by size (age) and sex, tooptimize the use of available habitat space, maximizing the number of specimensthat can thrive in their habitat.
