Founded in 1881, the American School of Classical Studies at Athensis the most significant resource in Greece for American scholars in thefields of Greek language, literature, history, archaeology, philosophy,and art, from pre-Hellenic times to the present. It offers two majorresearch libraries: the Blegen, with over 99,000 volumes dedicated tothe ancient Mediterranean world; and the Gennadius, with over120,000 volumes and archives devoted to post-classical Helleniccivilization and, more broadly, the Balkans and the easternMediterranean. The School also sponsors excavations and providescenters for advanced research in archaeological and related topics atits excavations in the Athenian Agora and Corinth, and it houses anarchaeological laboratory at the main building complex in Athens. Byagreement with the Greek government, the School is authorized toserve as liaison with the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Tourism onbehalf of American students and scholars for the acquisition ofpermits to conduct archaeological work and to study museumcollections.
