To the editor: Dubinsky’s broadoverview of emergency physician(EP) ‘‘workload’’ models1 has important implications to populationhealth outcomes and national physician resource planning. It seemsthat this is a complex issue and thatthere is ‘‘no perfect single existingmodel.’’ I wonder, however, whetherthis article adequately differentiatesbetween 1) matching emergency medicine capacity with patient/populationneeds and 2) modeling workload forthe purposes of fair compensation.Practically, they may be two sides ofthe same coin, but conflating thesetwo perspectives risks creating conflicting priorities. As Einstein has said,‘‘Formulating the problem is moreessential than the solutions.’’
