Treatmentforatheroscleroticvasculardiseaseinhumanbeingsrangesfrommedicalmanagementtointerventionaltherapy,suchasangioplasty,atherectomy,andbypassgrafting.Recently,bypassgraftingwithavascularprosthesishasreceivedincreasedattentionandclinicaluse.Inthecourseofstudiestooptimizeuseofasmall-calibervascularprosthesis,fiveofsixrabbitsundergoingimplantationofapolytetrafluoroethylenevascularprosthesisintheinfrarenalabdominalaortadevelopedhindlimbneurologicdeficits,whichresultedfromfocalischemicdamagetothespinalcordattributabletotemporaryvascularocclusionoftheabdominalaortaduringplacementofthevascularprosthesis.Insubsequentstudies,inductionofsystemichypothermiadecreasedtherateofdevelopmentofneurologicdeficitsfrom83to9%withoutanyapparentperioperativecomplicationsassociatedwithdecreasedbodytemperature.Wedeterminedthatmildhypothermia(rectaltemperatureof32to35°C),combinedwithaorticocclusiontimeof40min,issufficienttoaffordprotectionfromischemicinjurytothespinalcordintherabbit.
