NeonatalfosteringhasbeenevaluatedasameansofeliminatingHelicobacterhepaticusinfectioninlaboratorymousecolonies.Thepurposeofthepresentstudywastoevaluatecross-fosteringofneonatalC57BL/6pupsfromexperimentallyinfecteddamsaftermale-absentparturitionandtodeterminetheeffectsofsexandhousingstrategyonH.hepaticuspopulations.Approximately20C57BL/6mice(age,1to4days)werefostereddaily.Inallfosteredmice,fecalsamplescollectedat21and42daysofageandcecalsamplescollectedat42daysofagetestednegativeforH.hepaticusbypolymerasechainreactionanalysis.OurresultsdemonstratethatremovalofthemalepriortoparturitionextendsthefosteringperiodtoyieldHelicobacter-freemice.Inasecondexperiment,theeffectsoftimeofinfection,housingstrategy,andsexonfecalH.hepaticussheddingandcecalcolonizationwereevaluated.Neithertimenorhousingstrategyaffectedbacterialshedding.Incontrast,fecalandcecalbacterialloadswerehigherinmalemiceversusfemalemice.Anovelpredictivealgorithmwasdevelopedtopredictcecalbacterialcolonizationlevelsinlightoffecalbacterialloads.OurfindingslikelywillproveusefulinHelicobactereradicationeffortsandinstudiesdesignedtofurtherelucidatetheroleofH.hepaticusindisease.
