Excessivelipidaccumulationwithinhepatocytes,orhepaticsteatosis,isthepathognominicfeatureofnonalcoholicfattyliverdisease(NAFLD),adiseaseassociatedwithinsulinresistanceandobesity.Low-carbohydratediets(LCD)improvetheseconditionsandwereimplementedinthisstudytopotentiallyattenuatehepaticsteatosisinhypercholesterolemicguineapigs.Maleguineapigs(n=10pergroup)wererandomlyassignedtoconsumehighcholesterol(0.25g/100g)ineitheraLCDorahigh-carbohydratediet(HCD)for12wk.AscomparedwithHCD,plasmaLDLcholesterolwaslowerandplasmatriglycerideswerehigherinanimalsfedtheLCDdiet,withnodifferencesinplasmafreefattyacidsorglucose.Themostprominentfindingwasa40%increaseinliverweightinguineapigsfedtheLCDdietdespitenodifferencesinhepaticcholesterolortriglyceridesbetweentheLCDandtheHCDgroups.Regardlessofdiet,alllivershadseverehepaticsteatosisonhistologicexamination.Regressionanalysissuggestedthatliverweightwasindependentofbodyweightandlivermasswasindependentofhepaticlipidcontent.LCDlivershadmoreproliferatinghepatocytesthandidHCDlivers,suggestingthatinthecontextofcholesterol-inducedhepaticsteatosis,dietarycar-bohydraterestrictionenhanceslivercellproliferation.
