Cottonrats(Sigmodonhispidus)havebeenusedtostudyavarietyofinfectiousagents,particularlyhumanrespiratoryviralpathogens.Duringthecourseofcomprehensivepathologicevaluationsofagingbreedersfromourbreedingcolony,6of22(27%)femalecottonratshadhistologicevidence,limitedtothelungs,ofembolizedcellsthatwereconfirmedtobetrophoblasticinoriginbyHSD3B1immunoreactivity.Whenpulmonarytrophoblastemboliwerenumerous,theyusuallywereassociatedwithadditionalhistologicfindingsinthelungs,includingpulmonaryedemaandhemorrhage,endothelialhypertrophy,fibrinoidvascularnecrosis,andabundantalveolarmacrophagescontainingfreshfibrinandhemolyzingerythrocytes.Ofthe6cottonratswithpulmonarytrophoblastemboli,5(83%)wereat8to18dofthe27-dgestationperiod,withthegreatestnumberofemboliperlungpresentbetweendays10through14.Theremainingcottonrathadafocalpulmonarytrophoblastembolusandwasnotpregnantbuthaddeliveredalitter3mopreviously.Threeothercottonratsineithertheearlyorlatestagesofgestationshowednohistologicevidenceofpulmonarytrophoblastdeportation.Thisreportisthefirsttodocumentpulmonarytrophoblastemboliincottonrats.Thisfindingsuggeststhatcottonratsmaybeanalternativeanimalmodelforthestudyofnormalandaberranttrophoblastdeportationinroutinepregnanciesandgestationalpathologicconditionsinwomen.
