Theobjectiveofthestudyreportedherewastoinvestigatethreefactorsthatmayaffecttheamountsofwaterconsumedandurineexcretedbyaratinthemetabolismcage:waterdilution,housing,andfood.YoungF344/Nrats(eightpergroup)wereusedforallexperiments.Foodwaswithheldfromratsbeforeeach16-hurinecollection,thenratsweretransferredintoametabolismcage.FortrialA(waterdilution),urinewascollectedfromratssuppliedwithdyedwater(0.05%,vol/vol).Thiswasrepeatedthreetimesovera2-weekperiod.Dyeinwaterorurinewasquantified,usingaspectrophotometer.FortrialB(housing),ratswereindividuallyhousedinwirecagesfor3weeksbeforethefirsturinecollection.Thentheyweregrouphousedinthesolid-bottomcage(fourpercage).After2weeksofacclimation,urinecollectionwasrepeated.FortrialC(food),onegroupofratswasprovidedwithfood,theotherwasnot,duringurinecollection.About8%ofurinesamplesofsmallvolume(#8804;3ml)fromtrialAwerecontaminatedwithdrinkingwaterupto13%ofvolume.Theaverageurinevolumeassociatedwithindividualhousingwasapproximatelytwiceaslargeasthatassociatedwithgrouphousing.Whenfoodwasprovidedduringurinecollection,ratsconsumedsimilaramountsofwaterbutexcretedsignificantlysmalleramountsofurinethandidratswithoutfood.Itwasconcludedthatwaterdilutionofaurinesamplefromasipperbottleisrelativelysmall;ratsindividuallyhousedinwirecagingbeforeurinecollectioncanconsumeandexcretealargerquantityofwater,comparedwithratsgrouphousedinsolid-bottomcages;andhighlyvariableurinevolumesare,inpart,associatedwithlackofaccesstofoodduringurinecollection.
