Multispecies Epidemiologic Surveillance Study after an Outbreak of Yersiniosis at an African Green Monkey Research Facility

AfteranoutbreakofYersiniaenterocoliticaataNHPresearchfacility,weperformedamultispeciesinvestigationoftheprevalenceofYersiniaspp.invariousmammalsthatresidedorforagedonthegroundsofthefacility,tobetterunderstandtheepizootiologyofyersiniosis.Bloodsamplesandfecalandrectalswabswereobtainedfrom105captiveAfricangreenmonkeys(AGM),12feralcats,2dogs,20mice,12rats,and3mongooses.TotalDNAextractedfromswabsuspensionsservedastemplateforthedetectionofY.enterocoliticaDNAbyreal-timePCR.NeitherY.enterocoliticaorganismsnortheirDNAweredetectedfromanyofthesesamples.However,WesternblottingrevealedthepresenceofYersiniaantibodiesinplasma.TheAGMsamplesrevealedaseroprevalenceof91%forYersiniaspp.andof61%forY.enterocoliticaspecifically.TheAGMthatwerehousedincageswhereatleastonefatalityoccurredduringtheoutbreak(clinicalgroup)hadsimilarseroprevalencetothatofAGMhousedinunaffectedcages(nonclinicalgroup).However,thenonclinicalgroupwasolderthantheclinicalgroup.Inaddition,25%,100%,33%,10%,and10%ofthesampledlocalcats,dogs,mongooses,rats,andmice,respectively,wereseropositive.ThehighseroprevalenceafterthisoutbreaksuggeststhatY.enterocoliticawastransmittedeffectivelythroughthecaptiveAGMpopulationandthatagewasanimportantriskfactorfordisease.KnowledgeregardinglocalenvironmentalsourcesofY.enterocoliticaandthepossibleroleofwildlifeinthemaintenanceofyersiniosisisnecessarytopreventandmanagethisdisease.
