The Plant Ontology Consortium (POC) (www.plantontology.org) is a collaborativeeffort among several plant databases and experts in plant systematics, botanyand genomics. A primary goal of the POC is to develop simple yet robustand extensible controlled vocabularies that accurately reflect the biology of plantstructures and developmental stages. These provide a network of vocabularies linkedby relationships (ontology) to facilitate queries that cut across datasets withina database or between multiple databases. The current version of the ontologyintegrates diverse vocabularies used to describeArabidopsis, maize and rice (Oryzasp.) anatomy, morphology and growth stages. Using the ontology browser, over 3500gene annotations from three species-specific databases, The Arabidopsis InformationResource (TAIR) forArabidopsis, Gramene for rice and MaizeGDB for maize, cannow be queried and retrieved.
