Ringtailisapathologicconditionofthetailofratsandotherrodentsthatistraditionallyattributedtolowenvironmentalhumidity,althoughdietarydeficiencies,geneticsusceptibility,environmentaltemperature,anddegreeofhydrationoftheanimalalsohavebeensuggestedaspossiblecauses.Totheauthors'knowledge,adetailedhistopathologicstudythatmayservetoshedlightontheetiopathogenesisofthisdiseasehasnotyetbeenpublished.Wedescribethehistologicfindingsofringtailobservedin12sucklingMunichWistarFromter(MWF)ratsfromtwolitters.Epidermalhyperplasiacharacterizedbyorthokeratoticandparakeratotichyperkeratosisandacanthosiswasobservedinallaffectedrats.Numerousoftendilatedvesselswerepresentinthedermisoftailsthatappearedofred/browncoloratgrossexamination.Inseverecases,thedilatedvascularstructureswerethromboticandaccompaniedbydermalhemorrhagesandfocalcoagulativenecrosisoftheoverlyingepidermis.Thesefindingssuggestthatepidermalacanthosisandhyperkeratosisarethemainandprimaryeventsinthedevelopmentofringtail.Toclarifythecauseofthisdisease,futurestudiesshouldbefocusedonthenumerousfactorsthatcaninducesuchepidermalchanges.
