Hearinginlaboratoryanimalsisatopicthattraditionallyhasbeenthedomainoftheauditoryresearcher.However,hearinglossandexposuretovariousenvironmentalsoundscanleadtochangesinmultipleorgansystems,makingwhatlaboratoryanimalshearofconsequenceforresearchersbeyondthosesolelyinterestedinhearing.Forexample,severalinbredmousestrainscommonlyusedinbiomedicalresearch(e.g.,C57BL/6,DBA/2,andBALB/c)experienceageneticallydetermined,progressivehearinglossthatcanleadtosecondarychangesinsystemsrangingfrombrainneurochemistrytosocialbehavior.Bothresearchersandlaboratoryanimalfacilitypersonnelshouldbeawareofbothstrainandspeciesdifferencesinhearinginordertominimizepotentiallyconfoundingvariablesintheirresearchandtoaidintheinterpretationofdata.Independentofgeneticdifferences,acousticnoiselevelsinlaboratoryanimalfacilitiescanhaveconsiderableeffectsontheinhabitants.Alargebodyofliteraturedescribesthenonauditoryimpactofnoiseonthebiologyandbehaviorofvariousstrainsandspeciesoflaboratoryanimals.Thebroadsystemiceffectsofnoiseexposureincludechangesinendocrineandcardiovascularfunction,sleep#8211;wakecycledisturbances,seizuresusceptibility,andanarrayofbehavioralchanges.Thesechangesaredeterminedpartlybyspeciesandstrain;partlybynoiseintensitylevel,duration,predictability,andothercharacteristicsofthesound;andpartlybyanimalhistoryandexposurecontext.Thisarticlereviewssomeofthebasicstrainandspeciesdifferencesinhearingandoutlineshowtheacousticenvironmentaffectsdifferentmammals.
