Anadultmalecynomolgousmacaque(Macacafascicularis)diedsuddenlyafteranesthesiaforapositronemissiontomographyscan.BacteriologiccultureofthemucopurulentsecretionsrecoveredfromtheendotrachealtubeyieldedheavygrowthofPseudomonasputida,aknownendotoxinproducer.Histologically,thelungshadsevere,diffuseperivascularedemaandneutrophilsmarginatingtotheendothelium.Thesuddendeathandthepathologicfindingswereconsistentwithperacuteendotoxicshock.Numerousenvironmentalswabspecimensofthesurgicalsuiteandequipmentweresubmittedforbacteriologicculture,aswereswabspecimensofendotrachealsecretionsfromacontrolanimal;however,Pseudomonasputidawasnotisolatedfromanyspecimen.TheanimalinthisreportmayhavecarriedPseudomonasputidaasacommensalintheoropharynx,andthestressofanesthesiamayhaveresultedinincreasedsensitivitytotheendotoxin.
