Prematurenewborninfantsarebornwithlimitedstoresofglycogenandfat.Energy,suchasmedium-chaintriglycerides(MCT),whichcansparetheuseofbodyproteinasmetabolicenergy,maybebeneficial.ThisstudycomparesMCTcontainingC8,C9,orC10fattyacidsasoralsourcesofenergyfornewbornrhesusmonkeys(Macacamulatta).Onday1oflife,4groupsof5monkeysweregivenasingledoseofwaterorMCTbynasogastrictube.Thedoseprovidedapproximately80%oftheexpectedenergyrequirement.PlasmaC8:0,C9:0,andC10:0fattyacidsandwhole-bloodD-(#8722;)-3-hydroxybutyrate(3HB)concentrationsweremeasuredat0,1,and3hafterdosing.Concentrationsoffreefattyacids(C8,C9,orC10)andketone(3HB)increasedwithtimeafterthedose.At1and3h,concentrationsofC8andC9didnotdiffer,butC9wasgreaterthanC10.At1h,blood3HBconcentrationsduetoC8triglyceridewerehigherthanC9orC10(503versus174and225#59157;mol/Lrespectively).AsMCTchainlengthincreasedfromC8toC10,bloodconcentrationof3HBdecreased.Odd-chainMCT(C9versusC8)resultedinlowerwhole-bloodketone(3HB),perhapsduetoC9metabolismortherateofreleaseoruptakeoffattyacids.TheseresultshaveimplicationsfortheuseofMCTinnutritionalsupplementsforpreterminfants.
