Humanpatientswithrenaldiseasefrequentlydevelopdisturbedsleepandseverefatigue.Todevelopamodelforstudyingfactorsthatcontributetothesesymptoms,wecharacterizedthesleeppatternsofvariousstrainsofmiceafteracutechallengewiththefungalorganismCandidaalbicans.Afterintravenousadministrationtomice,C.albicanstypicallycolonizesthekidney,producingacutepyelonephritis.Variousstrainsofinbredmicedemonstratemarkedvariationinthetemperatureandsleepresponsesthatdevelopafterchallenge,withindividualstrainsgenerallyshowingincreasedorreducedsomnolenceinassociationwithfeverorhypothermia,respectively.C.albicans-infectedmicemaybeausefulmodelforidentifyingthegenesandmechanismsthatlinksleep,temperature,fatigue,andtheimmuneresponse.
