WestNilevirus(WNV)surfacedasanemerginginfectiousdiseaseinthenortheasternUnitedStatesin1999,graduallyspreadacrossthecontinent,andisnowendemicthroughoutNorthAmerica.Outdoor-housednonhumanprimatesattheTulaneNationalPrimateResearchCenter(TNPRC)inLouisianaweredocumentedwitharelativelyhighprevalence(36%)ofantibodiestoWestNilevirus.WeexaminedtheprevalenceofantibodiestoWNVinanonhumanprimatepopulationhousedinoutdoorcoloniesattheYerkesNationalPrimateResearchCenterFieldStationlocatednearAtlanta,Georgia.Wescreenedrhesusmacaques(Macacamulatta)andsootymangabeys(Cercocebusatys)thatwereatleast3yoldbyserumneutralizationforantibodiestoWNVandconfirmedtheseresultsbyhemagglutination-inhibitionassay.Noneofthe45rhesusmonkeyshadantibodiestoWNV,but3ofthe45mangabeys(6.6%)werepositivebybothserumneutralizationandhemagglutination-inhibitiontests.TheratioofseroprevalencesintheTNPRCandYerkesprimatepopulationswassimilartotheratioofWNVincidencesinpeopleinLouisianaandGeorgiafrom2002to2004.Thedifferenceintheexposureofnonhumanprimates(andpossiblyhumans)toWNVbetweenthese2regionsisconsistentwiththedifferenceintheabundanceofmammal-bitingWNV-infectiousmosquitoes,whichwas23timeslowernearYerkesthanaroundTNPRCin2003and33timeslowerin2004.
