Avarietyofbonechambersareusedinorthopedicresearchtostudyboneandtissueingrowthinsmallandlargeanimals.Ifdifferentbonechambersareplacedinonespecies,differencesinboneingrowthareobserved.Forinstance,boneingrowthintheboneconductionchamber(BCC)ishigh,butisloworabsentintherepeatedsamplingbonechamber(RSBC).brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brThisdifferencemaybeexplainedbythedesignandfixationofthesechambers.Itisknownthatstressshieldingandmicromovementcaninfluenceboneformation.TheobjectiveofthestudyreportedherewastodeterminewhetherstressshieldingorsofttissuemovementaffectedboneingrowthintheBCCinthegoat.Twotypesofcapsweremade,withfixationsimilartothatofthefixationplateoftheRSBC.ByplacingthecapsovertheBCCsandfixatingthecapsdirectlytothetibialbone,theeffectofstressshieldingwasstudied.Onecapwasindirectcontactwiththebonechamberunderneath,theothercapdidnottouchthechamber.Thisdifferencewasusedtoobservewhethermovementofthesofttissueontopofthechamberandcapwouldaffectboneingrowth.Eachlimbreceivedonecontrolchamberwithoutacapandachamberwithacap,eitherwithorwithoutcontactingtheBCC,yieldingfourimplantspergoat.After12weeks,boneandtotaltissueingrowthsweremeasured.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brBoneingrowthwasseenin38of40chambers.TotaltissueandboneingrowthswerecomparablebetweencontrolchambersandBCCswithacap,irrespectiveoftype.Neitherstressshielding,norlackofmovementofsofttissueaffectedboneingrowth.OtherfactorsinthedesignofthechamberswereresponsibleforthedifferenceinboneingrowthbetweentheBCCandtheRSBC.
