BackgroundandPurpose:Twoofninefemaleopossums(Didelphisvirginiana)inaclosedbreedingcolonyweresubmittedfornecropsyduetoahistoryofpoorreproductiveperformanceintheabsenceofovertclinicaldisease.Onhistologicexamination,markedgranulomatoustopyogranulomatouspneumoniawasidentifiedintheseanimals.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brMethods:Lungsectionswerestainedwithperiodicacid-SchiffandGomori'smethenaminesilvernitrate.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brResults:Pulmonarylesionswerecharacterizedbylargenumbersoffoamymacrophageswithinthealveoliandinterstitium,prominentsubpleuralandperibronchiolaraggregatesofhistiocytes,andafewscatteredlymphoidnodules.Numerousfungalorganismswereevidentwithinthecytoplasmofmacrophagesonimpregnationofhistologicsectionswiththeaforementionedstains.Otherincitingagentswerenotidentified.Athirdopossumlackedpulmonarylesions,buthadsimilarorganismswithinoneauricularsebaceousgland/hairfolliclewithoutapparentreactiontotheorganisms.brxmlns="http://pub2web.metastore.ingenta.coms/"/brConclusion:Afungalagentwasassociatedwithgranulomatouspneumoniaintheopossum,andcomparisonwasmadewithendogenouslipidpneumoniapreviouslydescribedinopossums.Thesefindingsstresstheimportanceofuseofspecialstainsandadditionaldiagnostictechniqueswhenprominentalveolarmacrophageaccumulationispresentonhistologicexaminationoftheopossumlung.
