A New Set of Architectural Views for Documenting Software Architecture

Software architecture (SA) can be considered as a reflection of the end-product and its features. However, it is impossible to document all features of a complex system in a large and comprehensive model. Moreover, such a model is neither understandable nor desirable by the stakeholders. Architectural view is perhaps the most important concept in this regard. Documenting SA using multiple architectural views has attracted widespread attention. This paper presents a new set of architectural views (SAV) for documenting the architecture of software-intensive systems. The proposed SAV contains five architectural views: requirements view, conceptual view, logical view, development view, and deployment view. In order to document views, we propose a set of recommended stages along with possible artifacts in each stage. The main goal of our study is to propose a SAV for architecture documentation which is effectively usable and understandable from the point of view of stakeholders. This goal has been evaluated according to the Goal-Question-Metrics (GQM) approach. Results show significant improvement in the proposed SAV over previously proposed SAVs.
