OBJECTIVE: To identify the associated factors of occupational stress among nursesSTUDY DESIGN: Analytical Cross Sectional Study.PLACE AND DURATION: The study was performed at Dow University Hospital and Civil Hospital Karachi from 1st January 2015 to 30thNovember 2015.METHODOLOGY: A total of 265 nurses having at least one year of clinical experience were enrolled for the study. Semi-structuredoccupational stress questionnaire was used for data collection on demographics including age, gender, qualifications and jobcharacteristics including shift duty, job load, nature of the job, distance from workplace and income.RESULTS: Among total 265 nurses, 57.4% were female while 42.6% were male and 55.8% were married. Two-third of the nurses havingage less than 30 years was found to be severely stressed. Among all demographic variables only gender showed statistically significantassociation with job-related stress (p-value=0.015). Furthermore, in job characteristics variables the income was the variable thatexhibited a significant association with job-related stress (p-value=0.042).CONCLUSION: Overwhelming majority of nurses reported occupational stress. Gender and salary are found to be significantlyassociated with occupational stress.
