Theshrinkageatthecellularlevelwasdeterminedinthetransverseplaneofwoodusinganenvironmentalscanningelectronmicroscope(ESEM).Thewholeprocedureisbasedonpairsofimagesgrabbedwiththesameimagingconditions(magnification,workingdistance,voltage)withoutremovingthesamplefromthechamber:oneimagecollectedatsaturatedconditions(1067Pa,1deg;C)andtheotheratair#45;drystate(533Pa,16deg;C).Aclosedchainofthesamereferencepointschosenfromtheanatomicalmarkerswasdefinedonbothimagesattheexternalpartofthezoneofinterest.Acustomsoftwareprogram,calledMeshPore,allowedtheshrinkagecoefficientstobeextractedfromtheslightdifferenceofshapebetweenthesetwochains./font
