Caponization,orthecastrationofroosters,createsthepossibilityofaddedcommercialvalue,meaningthatsuchchickensmaycontributetohouseholdcashincome.Theobjectivesofthisresearchweretoclarifythestatusoftheimplementationofcaponization,whichisaformoffolkknowledge,inahillsidevillageinnorthernThailand,andtodiscussthepossibilityofthewidespreaduseofcaponizationbyshowingitsmeritsanddrawbacks.Caponizationisaformoffolkknowledgepossessedbyvillagers.Thevillagehadninepeopleabletocarryoutcaponization,includingsixwomen.Theywereagedfromtheirfortiestotheirsixties.Membersofyoungergenerationshadnotlearnedthecaponizationprocedure.Withtheexceptionofonewoman,theyhadstoppedconductingcaponizationaftertheearly2000s.Themeritsofcaponizationincludefatterandtastierchickens,aswellasthefactthatitstopsroosterschasinghens.Thedrawbacksofcaponizationincludehighmortalityaftersurgeryandthedifficultyofcaponizinglargeroosters.Thereisahighpossibilitythatsincetheintroductionoffightingcocksintothevillageduringthelate1990s,theirlargebodysizehasmeantthatthetraditionalcaponizationmethodcannolongerbeused.Reductionofmortalitybyintroducingveterinaryinformationaboutcaponization,andgeneratingandfindingnewdemandforcaponizedchickenswillbekeytothewidespreaduseofcaponization.
