ThecontributionofsheepandgoatstopastoralistlivelihoodislimitedbythefrequentoccurrenceoftradesensitivediseasessuchasPestedesPetitsRuminants(PPR).Adescriptiveriskbasedcross-sectionalsurveywasundertakentocharacterisesmallruminantdiseasecontrolandhusbandrypracticesintwopastoralregionsofKenya.TheoverallaimofthesurveywastocharacterisepastoralistsmallruminanthusbandrypracticessoastoenableamorefocusedPPRcontrolstrategyinpastoralareasofKenya.Atotalof63smallruminantownersweresurveyedofwhich55%(35)wereinKajiadoand45%(28)inMarsabit.nbsp;Thestudyrevealedthatall35sampledsitesinKajiadowerepermanentsettlementscomparedto18ofthe28sitessurveyedinMarsabit.SedentarizationwasalsoaccompaniedbydiversificationoflivelihoodsparticularlyinKajiadowhereonly57%oflivestockownersreliedentirelyonlivestockkeepingcomparedto75%inMarsabit.Inaddition,Kajiadolivestockownerspracticedamoreindividualisticsmallruminantmanagementevidencedbyinvestmentsinanimalhealthandbreedingprogrammes.Alllivestockownersinterviewedregularlyusedanthelminticdrugs,while57%sourcedforpreventivevaccinesfortheirsheepandgoatherds.Theoverallconclusionofthesurveywasthatsmallruminanthusbandrypracticeswereheterogeneousandweredeterminedbyaccesstoveterinaryservices,animalhealthinputsandmarkets.ThestudyrecommendsthatPPRdiseasecontrolprogrammesinpastoralsystemsofKenyabetailoredtospecificgeographicalareasbasedonthetypeoflivestockdiseaseprevalentwhiletakingintoaccountthesocialandeconomicsettingofthepastoralists#8217;communities.nbsp;
