Foralongtime,thesteppeconstitutesasocio-economicsupportforthepastoralpopulations.Theextensivebreeding,besideagricultureindrylandandthecraftindustry,istheprincipalactivityoftheagro-pastoralistsThisbreedingismaintainedthankstotheexploitationofthenaturalresourcesofthestepperegikon.Forabetterknowledgeofthecontrolofthefeedoftheanimalsinthesteppezonesandthefodderassessment,wecarriedoutanexhaustivesurveyof57householdslivinginthezoneofHadjMecheri.Thefactorsanthropicandnaturalofdegradationofvegetablecoverappreciablydecreasedtheforagepotentialofthearea.Currently,theseareaswithanimaldensityof70kg/haprovides66%oftheneedsfortheanimals.Thebarleycultivatedindrylandcoversonly19%oftheneeds.Sotheagro-pastoralistsareconstrained,tocoverthe15%oftheremainingneeds,bysupplementationwithpurchasedbarley.
