LimitedaccesstoqualityfeedsandreliablefeedsupplyareamongstthepriorityconstraintsofsmallholderpigproductioninUganda.Amongthefeedsgiventopigs,sweetpotato(SP),bananaandotherroottubersresiduesarecommon.However,informationonfarmers#8217;perceptionsandpracticesontheproperuseoftheseresiduesforpigfeedingislimited.Therefore,thisstudyaimedatassessingthoseaspects,aswellastoidentifyopportunitiesforbetteruseoftheseresiduesinthepig-SPsystems.AqualitativesurveywasundertakeninMasakaandKamuli,twodistrictsofUgandawithhighpigpopulationandSPproduction.FocusGroupDiscussions(FGD)andKeyInformantInterviews(KII)wereundertakenwith80smallscalepigandSPproducersand24keyinformants.ResultsfromthisstudyrevealedthatthemajorityofpigfarmersinthosedistrictsuseSPandotherRTBcropresiduesasanimalfeed.Duringtherainyseason,farmersscoredhightheutilizationofSPcropresidues,withthelatterbeingtheleadingcontributortothepigdietespeciallyintheruralarea.SPcropresiduesareusuallyfedtopigsfreshwithoutprocessing.Amongtheresidues,freshrawvinesrepresentthelargestpartfedtopig(70%),ascomparedtorootsandpeels.Thewaytheseresiduesareofferedvary,forexampleinperi-urbanareaswitheasieraccesstocommercialfeeds,farmersfeedthecropresiduesmixedwithconcentrates;whereasinruralareaswithlimitedaccesstocommercialfeeds,cropresiduestendtobegivenwithoutsupplementation.However,thefullpotentialofSPandotherRTBcropresiduesforpigfeedingisnotyetfullyexploitedasfarmersacceptthatalargeamountiswasted(37%inMasakaand40%inKamuli).InMasaka,theproportionofSPcropresiduesutilizedathouseholdlevelmostlyforpigfeedingwas40%,whileinKamuliwas52%.ThisstudydemonstratedthatthereispotentialforbetteruseofSPandotherRTBcropresiduesaspigfeedinthesmallholderpigfarmingsystemsinUganda,butthemajorconstraintaspointedoutbyfarmersisthepooraccesstotechnologiesforpreservingtheseresources.Therefore,thereisaneedforfurtherexplorationofstrategiesforconservingSPandotherRTBcropresiduesduringtheharvestingperiodforuseinpigfeedingduringtimesoffeedscarcity.
