Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the contribution of technicalvocabulary & general vocabulary to ESP reading comprehension.Objective: In thisstudy 2 groups of BA students were selected majoring English translation and Nursingfields of study.Results: These students were divided into two equal groups. Bothgroups received a first test including 60 multiple choice items, 30 general vocabularyitems from a TOEFL test and 30 technical vocabulary items in nursing sciences to makesure that the students in English translation had better general vocabulary & students innursing sciences had better technical vocabulary, and a second test including 30 ESPreading comprehension items from MA entrance examination of universities to capturethe probable differences between the effect of technical vocabulary & generalvocabulary to ESP reading comprehension.Conclusion: Then, with the help of T.Testthe data were computed. The result rejected the null hypothesis and indicated that thedifficulties which ESP students encounter in their reading comprehension arise not somuch from lack of technical vocabulary knowledge but from lack of general vocabularyknowledge. The findings of the present study can have theoretical as well aspedagogical implications for teachers, students, and syllabus designers.
