OJEDA RAMIREZ, María Dolores; GARCIA HITA, Sonia and GARCIA PEREZ, Ana María. Verbal communication as a method of analgesia for puctions in renal patients under haemodyalisis, is it really useful?. Rev Soc Esp Enferm Nefrol [online]. 2004, vol.7, n.2, pp.59-63. ISSN 1139-1375.Nurses dedicated to the care of renal patients under haemodyalisis are aware of the pain suffered by them. Because they are chronic patients andthey undergo punctions in the fistula several times, it is really important to reduce as much aspossible the level of pain. Distractions may allowthe patient to concentrate on sensorial stimulus different than the pain. Therefore, distraction is afactor that should be taken into account when punctions are done. The aim of this work was demonstrate that verbal communication with the patient during puction procedures decrease the levelof pain. We studied 40 patients (21 male and 19 female, age 58 +/- 19). The study was performed overone month. During the first two weeks, distractive techniques were used during puctions (groupA). During the next two weeks, no distractive techniques were used during puction (group B).The level of pain was quantitated using an analogic visual scale (AVS). During arterial punction, pain in group A was 1,11 +/- 1,14. In group B, it was 1,30+/- 1,31 (p=0.263, not significative).During venous punction, pain in group A was1.62 +/- 1.46 while in group B it was 1,72+/-1,36 (p=0.660, not significative). In conclusion, verbal communication techniquesare not useful to decrease the level of pain. In general, when distraction finishes, the patient feelsmore tired increasing the feeling of pain
