In order to analyze and compare the prevalence of antibodies to bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV-1), bovine herpesvirus 4 (BoHV-4) and bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), 2 cattle, 2 buffaloes and 3 mixed (both species) farms, were researched, besides including 3 buffaloe sale facilities. All cattle and buffalo herds were positive to BoHV-1 and 4. The seroprevalence to BoHV-1 in cattle was above 90%, while in buffaloes, it was 80.3%; however, seropositive values to BoHV-4 were higher in buffaloes (84%) than in cattle (72.4%). It is highlighted the high prevalence found in buffalo sale facilities to BoHV-1 (86.3%) and BoHV-4 (78.4%), which undoubtedly contributed to worsen the sanitary status of the herds. No differences between the types of farms were found for any of the viruses tested. It was observed that cattle and buffaloes which were negative to BoHV-4 in the first sample, were positive in the second one, which showed the circulation of this virus in the farm evaluated. This work constitutes the first evidence of the presence of BoHV-4 in Colombia. In the case of bovine viral diarrhea, it was present only in cattle of all mixed farms and in one cattle herd; and seroprevalence was found in 58.0% and 51.9% respectively with no differences between them. It was concluded that in cattle and buffaloe herds of Caquetá Department, there is a high prevalence of antibodies to BoHV-1 and 4, thus it is needed to continue research related to BVD virus in buffaloes.
