TheChathamIslandduck(Anseriformes:Anatidae:Anaschathamica)hadapronouncedandrugoseenlargementtothetipoftheprocessusextensoriusattheproximalendofitscarpometacarpus.Thisa€?carpalknoba€?wastheequalinsizeofthosefoundinsomemuchlargerwaterfowl(e.g.,steamerducks,Tachyeressp.),andwasdisproportionatelylargerthanthoseofallotherNewZealandwaterfowl.Theknobson20carpometacarpiexaminedallshowedevidenceofcontinuousbonedepositionattheirtipsandtheiruseasweaponsisimplied.ComparisonswithotherduckspecieshavingsimilarlyprominentandrugosecarpalknobssuggeststheChathamIslandduckmaintainedlong-termpairbondsandoccupiedcombinedfeedingandbreedingterritoriesyear-roundwhichbothsexesdefendedbelligerently.
