WepresentthefirstresultsofChandraandopticalfollow-upobservationsofhardX-raysourcesdetectedintheASCAMediumSensitivitySurvey(AMSS).Opticalidentificationsweremadeforfiveobjects.Threeofthemshoweitherweakorabsentopticalnarrowemissionlines,andareatlowredshift$$langlez anglesim0.06$$.Oneofthemisabroadlineobjectat$$z=0.910$$andoneisa$$z=0.460$$objectwithonlynarrowlines.Allofthenarrow-lineobjectsshowstrongevidenceofabsorptionintheirX-rayspectra.TheirlineratiosareconsistentwithaSeyfertII/LINERidentification,asarethelinewidths.Thethreelow-redshiftobjectshavethecolorsofnormalgalaxies,andapparentlythelightisdominatedbystars.ThiscouldbeduetoextinctionoftheunderlyingnuclearcontinuumbythesamematterthatabsorbsX-raysand/orduetodilutionofthecentralsourcebystarlight.TheseresultssuggestthatX-raysourcesthatappearasa€?normala€?galaxiesinopticalandnear-IRbandssignificantlycontributetothehardX-raybackground.Thispopulationofobjectshasahighspacedensity,andprobablydominatestheentirepopulationofactivegalaxies.
