Asubparsec-scaledenseplasmatorusaroundanactivegalacticnucleusisunveiled.Wereportonvery-long-baselineinterferometry(VLBI)observationsat2.3,8.4,and15.4a€‰GHztowardstheactivegalaxyNGC1052.Theconvexspectraofthedouble-sidedjetsandthenucleusimplythatsynchrotronemissionisobscuredthroughfreea€“freeabsorption(FFA)bytheforegroundcolddenseplasma.AtrichromaticimagewasproducedtoillustratethedistributionoftheFFAopacity.Wefoundacentralcondensationoftheplasmawhichcoversabout0.1a€‰pcand0.7a€‰pcoftheapproachingandrecedingjets,respectively.Asimpleexplanationfortheasymmetricdistributionistheexistenceofathickplasmatorusperpendiculartothejets.WealsofoundanambientFFAabsorber,whosedensityprofilecanbeascribedtoasphericaldistributionoftheisothermalKingmodel.Thecoexistenceoftorus-likeandsphericaldistributionsoftheplasmasuggestsatransitionfromradialaccretiontorotationalaccretionaroundthenucleus.
