ASCA Observations of the Temperature Structure and Metal Distribution in the Perseus Cluster of Galaxies

Large-scaledistributionsofhot-gastemperatureandFeabundanceinthePerseusclusterhavebeenstudiedwithmulti-pointingobservationsbytheGISinstrumentonboardASCA.Withinaradiusof$${20{}^{mathrm{prime}}}$$fromtheclustercenter,theenergyspectrarequirestwotemperaturecomponents,inwhichthecoolcomponentindicates$$kTsim2;mathrm{keV}$$andthehot-componenttemperatureshowsasignificantdeclinefromabout8keVto6keVtowardthecenter.Intheouterregionofthecluster,thetemperatureshowsafluctuationwithanamplitudeofabout2keV,whichsuggestthatawesternregionat$$sim{16{}^{mathrm{prime}}}$$fromtheclustercenterisrelativelyhotter.AsfortheFeabundance,asignificantdeclinewithradiusisdetectedfrom0.44solaratthecenterto$$sim0.1$$solarata$${50{}^{mathrm{prime}}}$$offsetregion.IftheobservedFe-Klineintensitywithin$${4{}^{mathrm{prime}}}$$fromthecenterissuppressedbyafactorof2duetotheresonancescatteringeffect,thecorrectedFemassdensityfollowsthegalaxydistribution.Finally,ourresultsdonotsupportthelarge-scalevelocitygradientspreviouslyreportedfromthesameGISdata.
