ASCA Observation of Bright X-Ray Sources in the Nearby Spiral Galaxy IC 342

X-rayobservationsofthenearbystarburstgalaxyIC342withASCAledtothedetectionofthreebrightX-raysources,whosepositionsareconsistentwiththosefromtheEinsteinandROSATobservations.TheX-rayluminositiesofthetwosourcesexceedtheEddingtonlimitofa1.4Ma??objectbytwoordersofmagnitudeforanassumeddistanceof4.5Mpc.Thebrightestone(source1)amongthethreeexhibitedsignificanttimevariationsonatimescaleofafewhoursduringtheASCAobservation.Thus,thesizeoftheemissionregionmustbesmallerthanabout1014cm.Theenergyspectrumofthesourcecanberepresentedeitherbyapower-lawwithanexponentialroll-over,orbyanopticallythickaccretiondiskmodelwithamaximumcolortemperatureof1.77keV.Althoughthelargeluminosityofsource1maybeexplainedbyaa??100Ma??blackholeat4.5Mpc,theobservedenergyspectrumistoohardtobeaccountedforbyanopticallythickaccretiondiskaroundtheblackhole.Ifsource1isarelativisticjetsourcewithstrongX-raybeaming,boththelargeluminosityandthehardX-rayspectrumcanbeexplained.
