ThedistributionandkinematicsofmoleculargasinthecentralregionofthebarredspiralgalaxyMaffei2wereinvestigatedusingadatasetof$$^{12}$$CO(1-0),$$^{12}$$CO(2a€“1),CS(2a€“1)lines,and103GHzcontinuum.Wefoundthattheoffsetridgesalongthekpc-scalebarcontinuetothecentralspiralstructureembeddedinaweakovalstructure,whichisregardedasan$$x$$2orbitinthebarpotential.Thespiralstructurecontinuestowardthecenter,divergingfromtheovalstructure.Thesizeofthesestructuresislessthan$$R$$$$sim$$100pc.Themassconcentrationwithin$$R=$$35pcisestimatedtobe$$2 imes10^{8}M_{odot}$$.Thehighmassconcentrationisconsistentwiththeoreticalpredictionsconcerningthecreationofsuchanuclearspiralstructure.Acomparisonwithtracersofdensegasandstar-formingregionsuggeststhatthedensemoleculargastracedbytheCS(2a€“1)lineisformedatthecrossingpointsofthe$$x$$1and$$x$$2orbitsandthestar-formingregionappearsafter$$2 imes10^{5}$$yr,whichiscomparabletothefree-falltimeofdensegastracedbytheCSline($$sim$$$$10^{5}$$cm$$^{-3}$$).
