GABAY: An e-Learning Filipino Sign Language Tutorial Using Manifold Learning and Dynamic Time Warping

With the advent of commercial products incorporating hand gestures as human-computer interface, the problem of hand gesture recognition has received mainstream attention such that the renewed interest in the field has spurred a number of new research. Several hand gesture recognition systems have been developed in other countries but none caters to the needs of the Filipino deaf community. In this paper, we developed a system that enables the deaf and students alike to learn the Filipino Sign Language (FSL) in a self-paced computer-based tutorial. The system makes use of manifold learning to model hand gestures and implements Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) as similarity measure. Experiments show promising results with an average acceptance rate as high as 85%.
