Cancer accounts for approximately one-ffth of the total disease burden inAustralia, with 94% of this burden due to premature death.1Depending on the cancer type, and the quality and appropriateness ofscreening protocols, screening programs can prevent such premature death, reduce numbers of people with advanced disease, enable more conservativeclinical management and improve survivorship outcomes. However, someforms of screening can also cause signifcant harms, which need to be weighedagainst the expected benefts.
