A comparison between 72 chromosome exchanges in human lymphocytes induced by methyl-metanesulphonate (MMS) and 84 exchanges induced by mitomycin C (MC) revealed a different pattern. The prevalence of attenuations, lateral extensions and exchanges in the secondary constrictions of chromosomes 1, 9, and 16 in the MC-treated material is not found with MMS. This may be due to a specific gathering effect of MC upon this particular chromatin. Both materials show a prevalence of C-band exchange, which may be due to repetitious DNA.
