The work presented in this paper measures thecontribution of developers towards evolved structuraldesign of software systems. Measuring the contribution ofdevelopers is useful for project managers who manage thedevelopment process. Project managers can empiricallyidentify developers who made changes to the structuraldesign and compare among them based on theircontributions. The proposed measures help to understandthe nature of developers’ code changes activities. Theprocess of calculating the measures is based on the historicalcode changes committed by developers. Specifically, codechanges that affect the corresponding UML class diagramrepresentation of the source code. Both type and amount ofprevious changes to class elements are used to measure thedesign contributions. The proposed measures are helpfulfor open source projects where no detailed information isavailable about various developers involved in thedevelopment process. A tool has been developed toautomatically measure the contributions based on archivedhistorical code changes. The measures have been applied ontwo open source projects. Results showed that only smallnumber of developers have the major design contributions.
