Inhibitory Effect of Some Medicinal Plants from Iran on Swarming Motility of Proteus Rods

In order to develop a media to abolish the swarming of proteus without effecting the growth of other bacteria, the anti-swarming activity of 25 plant essential oils or extracts were evaluated on standard and clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Escherichia coli , Proteus mirabilis, P . vulgaris and P . Penner i, using standard agar dilution method. The most effective anti-swarming agents tested were; the mixture containing equal amounts of essential oil of Ferula gumosa Boiss plus Lavandula officinalis and essential oil of Zataria multiflora Boiss . Essential oil of Zataria multiflora Boiss had antibacterial activity and inhibited the growth of many isolates at concentration of 2%. Whereas the essential oil of Lavandula officinalis plus Ferula gumosa Boiss although had no antibacterial activity at this concentration, completely inhibited the swarming behavior of all the proteus strains tested. This mixture was quite active in the presence of 7.5% blood as in blood agar plates. Essential oil of Zataria multiflora Boiss and Lavandula officinalis plus Ferula gumosa Boiss with good anti-swarming activities and long shelf life, are commercially available and can be used as an effective anti-swarming agent for preparation of media in clinical laboratories for the isolation of more fastidious bacteria in a mixed culture with proteus.
